Coach
Greg McFadden began playing rugby at age five in Belfast, his hometown. His mother recalls young Greg wearing his boots to bed the night before games. After playing for St. Bede's College under 16's and the South Island under 16's in 1984, he played a big part of the St. Bede's Championship 7's team and the St. Bede's Runner-up 1st XV team, both in 1986. As a result, he was chosen for the Canterbury Secondary Schools team in 1985-86 and for the Southern Region Secondary Schools Team and the South Island under-18's in 1985-86, as well as being chosen as a New Zealand Schools trialist.
Greg played representative (regional) rugby for the Canterbury B side in 1987 and the Canterbury-A team in 1988. He went on to represent the Canterbury Colts under-21's for two years. Chosen for New Zealand's Most Promising Player School, he won a spot on the New Zealand All Blacks under-19 team in 1987. Previously, Greg coached New Zealand's Belfast under-18 team to second place in the Christchurch City Competition in spring 1995 and was a player/coach for the Oklahoma City Rugby Club, 1994-1996. In 2007, he became a USA Rugby- certified coach.
Greg credits his love for the game to his father, Les, who is an administrator with the Canterbury Rugby Union and a liaison with the All Blacks. In 2006, Queen Elizabeth II awarded the senior McFadden the Queen's Service Medal for his 50 years of service to sport in New Zealand.
