The Art Of Basketball Shooting Discovered

Since the sport of basketball was invented more than a century ago, youth, high school and college basketball coaches and players have all attempted to master the art of basketball shooting but in the 21st Century, high school basketball coach Steve Fisher has done just that.

Taking into account physics and a players body style, hand size and finger length coach Fisher has produced a remarkable and insightful DVD on the art of basketball shooting called The Secrets of Shooting.

I realized that there is a strong correlation between hand placement, wrist action, and how you release the ball. After studying great shooters of the NBA, I identified four distinct styles that different players use, said Fisher.

These four distinctive styles are all incorporated in his one-of-a-kind DVD which clearly explains how players can improve their technique of shooting a basketball. Jacob Hays, provides narration and carefully and with simplicity explains the techniques demonstrated in the Secrets of Shooting while the Fisher Sharp Shooters demonstrate each step of the way. But these techniques did not come to Fisher overnight. Its a process that included his own attempts as an average high school basketball player and then later as a small town high school basketball coach to help all of his players become more confident and accurate shooters.

After reading Bill Sharmans book, Sharman on Basketball Shooting and John Fontanellas The Physics of Basketball, I realized that one size does not fit all and an individualized approach to the art of shooting a basketball was the best one for all players.

Included in his research was the study of some of the greatest basketball shooters of all time, from Pistol Pete Maravich, Rich Barry and Reggie Smith to George Gervin, Jerry West and Kobe Bryant.

He also studied biomechanics, body types, finger lengths, dart throwing, golf instruction the physics of dance and even medical studies and with all of his research and with his acquired knowledge developed the four distinct shooting methods covered in the DVD.

Traditional basketball shooting is geared to tall, thin ectomorph body types so many of todays young population are left out, Fisher said. I take an individualistic approach to basketball shooting and my DVD shows the correct techniques to shooting incorporating the four distinct shooting methods. Fisher also puts to rest the notion that repetition alone will make a basketball player a better shooter.

The beauty of the DVDs approach is that the results are immediate. The methods sell themselves. When kids see the ball go in they believe, said Fisher. Its perfect for players of any age and basketball camp, youth, high school and college basketball players.

Key Basketball Drills

Lay-up Drill One of the most important fundamentals in shooting the lay-up is jumping as high as possible. Many players brad jump and flip the ball at the basket as they go by. A good way to break the broad jump habit is to place an obstacle like a chair underneath the backboard. The player should drive straight for the chair, jump high for the lay-up, and come down in front of the chair without touching it. Vary the angle and speed of the drive, placing the chair further beneath the basket for faster drives. For the drive down the middle, place another chair in front of the basket and force the shooter to one side or the other making him bank the shot.

Catch Rebound This is another good drill to force the player to jump high for the lay-up and control his speed as he goes up for the shot. The player should drive hard at the basket, taking a long last stride and planting the take-off foot hard on the floor before jumping as high as possible. He should come straight down after the shot and try to get the rebound before it hits the floor. Strive to increase the speed of the drive and height of the jump

Quick Stop and Jump One of the most important offensive moves in the modern game is to drive off a screen, stop quickly and take the jump shot. A player should practice for long hours the drive and jump shot, dribbling to the right for one shot and back to the left of another. A chair (or another player) may be placed in front of the player for use as a screen. He should drive close to the chair, and as he clears it, stop quickly and take the jump shot. Vary the drill by having the player drive straight at the chair and stop and jump. This practice will force him to make his jump up instead of out, thus getting higher off the floor for the shot. It should also prevent his falling into his man after the shot. If players can work in pairs they should screen for each other instead of using the chairs. The best way to do this is to have one pass drives by and takes the jump shot.

How The Rugby Ball Got Its Shape

Most legends about ruby may deviate, but one documented fact that all agree about to be true, is the origin of the rugby ball. Apart from minor deviations, the historical evidence of the rugby ball journey is widely accepted and is verifiable. Contrary to the traditionally much famed William Web Ellis story, this tale has factual grounds. Initiated from the very basics, the ball comes from the same place where the game is accepted as well as expected to have started. Rugby School in England, thats where two cobblers played the major role in its invention.

These two cobblers were owners of their own boot shops, and lived in the vicinity as that of Rugby School. Richard Lindon and William Gilbert had these mens stores on the High Street which used to lead to quad entrance at Rugby School. This area was used as students- make shift playing fields before Rugby School formally provided their own fields named The Close.

Adjusting to the shift William Gilbert transferred his location right across The Close on Matthews Street, in 1842.

Their innovative aptitude led them (along boots making) to craft leather balls for school children. Their success finally was about to lend them as the sole supplier for the future rugby balls.

The introductory balls were hand stitched of a leather casing along with a pigs bladder and was blown up by hand (or mouth) through a narrow pipe of clay. Due to the material being acquired from dead animals organs, the smell was quite repugnant, and thus a disgusting experience for the blower.

Blowing the pigs bladder was quite a risky procedure too, since it would get infected and the blower may acquire the disease as a result of repetitive blowing. Lindons wife famously died because of regular blowing up of these rugby balls as she got infected with a lung ailment.

The pig bladders did not have a fixed size, as it was as the size of the pig, thereby the size of these balls couldnt be standardized for long. After inflation, the pig bladder has the same natural shape as that of an oval rugby ball. The same shape has been carried over for all these years, as an oval form. Even after synthetic rubber had arrived, the basic shape has still carried forward and thus the tradition has passed on successfully.

The synthetic rubber was invented Richard Lindon, started substituting the pig bladder by this material and a hand pump was also provided to inflate the balls. With the virtue of rubber, these balls started to have consistent standard shapes and the actual size specifics were also laid down.

Dont feel disgusted next time when you have the ball in your hand, the pig bladder was worth the fun we have today with these vulcanized rubber balls. Without them the game wouldnt have survived for rubber and us.

Atlanta Celtics Basketball

The Atlanta Celtics organization is a non-profit spring and summer youth basketball program that works to develop life changing skills in talented student athletes. For more than 20 years their mission has been to help guide children as they learn to make good decisions on and off the basketball court. The program encourages the kids to work hard to be the best they can be today, and to become strong leaders and productive citizens in the future.

The Celtics organization believes the team concept is an essential part of the programs plan. Players learn to work together as a team, showing good sportsmanship and being unselfish on offense. All players on the team are utilized, and the basic fundamentals of the game are emphasized. The style of play is aggressive, and players must be in good physical condition. The Atlanta Celtics teams compete against top teams in Georgia and the Southeast.

In addition to their work on the basketball court, Celtics players are expected to achieve academic success as well. Special tutoring is provided to players who need extra help with their studies. The Celtics partner with Academic Assistance Program, Inc. (AAP) to provide this service for those families. Every child that plays basketball in the Celtics program is encouraged to attend college to further their education. Many players in the program have gone on to receive scholarships to top rated colleges and universities. Celtics players have played college basketball at University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Auburn University, LSU, Virginia Tech, Alabama, University of Florida, and Florida State. Several of the programs alumni have had careers in the NBA.

Students as young as the 3rd grade may try out for the Celtics. There are teams for youth ages 7-19 years of age, in elementary, middle, and secondary school. The organization averages between 20-26 teams per season. Tryouts are held in January. Some of the teams may play in the very competitive Amateur Athletics Union (AAU) and the Youth Basketball of America (YBOA) tournaments, which are held 2 to 3 weekends each month during the season. These organizations sponsor regional and state tournaments, and winning teams may qualify for the national tournament that is held each summer.

The Atlanta Lady Celtics girls division, for female athletes in high school, is a subsidiary of the Atlanta Celtics. The teams are members of the adidas Grassroots Girls Basketball organization and play in affiliated adidas tournaments. In 2011 90% of the graduating girls accepted scholarships to play basketball at the college level, in such schools as Georgia Southern, Mercer, and the Air Force Academy.

Fantasy Rugby Help

For the first time I have broken my two cardinal rules in Fantasy Rugby. They’re my only two rules, as well as the reason I have been able to stay at the top of any fantasy rugby league I have been in since I started playing in 2002. Each rule has been broken only once this season, but I have now slipped from third location to thirteenth location in my Super 14 Fantasy Rugby league. I am sure my neighbours on the table aren’t even participating.

Rule Number One: Always have a valid team.

This isn’t rocket science. In case you do not have a team valid you get no points for the entire round. What I have now learned is that you should not even alter your team close to the deadline. I made an arbitrary change in my fantasy rugby team, and just as I was about to replace the player my computer froze and I couldn’t discover a way to replace him. As I tried to locate a way to get on the web I watched the time tick away until eventually the cut off time was reached and my carefully crafted team was invalidated for the entire round; all due to the fact I tried to alter the team too close to the cut off date.

Rule Number Two: Be sure your whole team is supposed to take the field.

It seems simple, but this should be a priority. Several hours just before kick off scan the news for any late withdrawals. I normally scan by way of my team and compare with the newest team lists to ensure everyone is playing. The week after I had an invalid team I backed this up by making the terrible fantasy rugby mistake of having a player who was ruled out mid-week remain in my team for the weekend. To make it worse, the player was Dan Carter. As everybody else sold him my team value went down $400,000 and 1 of the premium spots on any fantasy rugby team, the inside backs, was worthless.

These rules may well appear simple, but they are fairly simple to break if you are not careful. The repercussions of breaking either, especially rule number one, can break your whole rugby season, and send you towards the bottom of your fantasy rugby league. This is what has happened to me. You can find additional benefits of paying attention to rule number two though. If you are quick with selling any injured players you get to sell them at the very best price and everyone who sells them after you’ll get a progressively worse price.

You will not be guaranteed to win by abiding by these rules, but in case you break them you will not stand a chance. I have had some fantastic point scoring rounds since I broke the two rules, but I never recovered from the round where I had an incomplete team. Financially I have also struggled since I lost all that cash on Dan Carter.

So with these two ideas in mind, great luck with the coming season.

There Are Differences Between An Adult Baseball Glove And A Youth Baseball Glove.

The Youth Baseball Glove

There is a difference between a baseball glove and a baseball mitt. A glove has separate fingers while a mitt is like a huge mitten with all the fingers in one space. Catchers are generally the only players wearing mitts.

There are differences between an adult glove and a youth glove. Size and function are 2 of those differences. Fit is probably most important to getting the right glove. If it’s too big or too small it is very difficult to control the ball one is trying to catch with it. This can lead to frustration and disinterest for the youth baseball player. To fit the youth glove properly start with a measurement of the glove. This is done with a tailor’s tape. A hard ruler will not conform to the hand and will give an incorrect measurement. Measure the baseball glove from the tip of the middle finger (or tallest spot on the glove), down across the palm, to the wrist.

Children’s gloves (ages 5-6) range in size from 10-10 ; youth gloves (ages 7-12) range in size from 10 -11 depending on the size and age of the child. High-schooler and adult gloves range in size from 11- 12 depending on the position played. The glove gets larger the farther the position played is from the pitcher’s mound. So an outfielder’s glove will be larger then an infield glove.

The materials have changed in gloves as well. While the traditional glove, the one from out of the past, was hard cowhide, today’s baseball gloves are made from a number of different materials. This helps to make the baseball glove of just the right stiffness-not too hard and not too floppy. The youth baseball glove is designed for the child whose strength and dexterity are still developing, as well as eye to hand coordination. Hence, picking the right baseball glove is of great importance, something better accomplished in person than on the internet.

So now we’ve gotten just the right youth glove for our budding ball player. What next? Now, the baseball glove needs to be “broken in”. Most people like to rub something into the leather to break it in. There are numerous products to accomplish this: Vaseline, neat’s-foot oil, mink oil, saddle soap, even shaving cream. Many people tie a baseball into the center after applying the oil. The important thing when treating the it is to be careful not to apply too much of whichever product is used. Too much oil will soften the leather too much and cause it to disintegrate quickly. Of course, the best way to break in all new gloves is to use it. So the next step: play ball!

Organizing Practice Sessions For Club Baseball Teams

There are a lot of challenges involved with coaching club baseball teams. One of the most difficult challenges is making sure that your practice sessions and times are productive. It is easy to waste time during a practice session, but this wasted time results in losses instead of wins. It is also not utilizing the time properly to help teach the kids on the team skills and principles to help them play the game better and grow in their confidence. This is why it is critical to the success of your team to make sure that each practice session is well organized and that you have made use of every minute you have with your team.

One of the first things you need to make part of the practice plan for the club baseball teams you coach is warm ups. Warm ups are essential to getting the team both physically and mentally prepared for the practice session that is to come. You should schedule warm ups to be at least twenty to thirty minutes at the beginning of practice. Have one member of the team each practice be the captain and lead players in stretches and exercises. After warm ups it is essential to immediately get to the throwing routine for the day so that arms are warmed up across the team.

After your club baseball teams have warmed up, it is time to move on to the drills that make up practice. You want to kick things off with a drill that is known as the rundown. This particular drill is designed to help players develop the skills needed to throw runners out before they reach a base. This drill is usually performed by having one half of the teams players on first base while the remaining half is on second base. There is a runner that is positioned between first and second, and the player with the ball on first must throw the ball to the player on second before he reaches base. The player on second will then throw back to the player on first and the drill will continue.

You also want to schedule some time for the club baseball teams to work on both individual skills and group skills. Divide an equal amount of time between the two to ensure that all the important fundamentals are practiced by each player. You want to spend some time on hitting as well and end with a cool down before closing out the practice.

Disproving Rugbys Bad Reputation

Rugby is an internationally acclaimed sport played by people around the world. There are around 70 countries that have their own international rugby team, also known as rugby league clubs. There are two major rugby leagues, one in Europe and another in the Australian region.

However, even with its increasing popularity in the United States, rugby is still widely perceived as a primarily British sport. This is because rugby originated from England during the beginning of the 19th century. While American football can easily be recognized by many, not all Americans know what rugby is. In some cases, rugby games are mistaken for football, which is ironic because rugby originated from American football.

One of the main reasons why football has not yet reached mainstream status in America is because of its negative reputation. Rugby is widely considered to be a sport played during drinking sessions and parties. Also, due to its seemingly awkward and rough nature, it has gained some degree of notoriety. It also seems a lot more dangerous than American football because players dont wear padding and protective gear. However, a lot of rugby players believe that rugby is not as bad as people think it is.

Although rugby games involve a lot of bruising and muscle sores, rugby league club members do not suffer as much injuries as American football players. This is because the lack of protective gear actually encourages players to play with more caution. Players do not blindly perform bone-breaking tackles, and since there are no helmets, players do not recklessly push against each other.

Sustaining injuries in rugby is just as likely as getting injured in other sports like baseball and soccer. There are adequate rules and regulations to prevent rugby league club members from getting serious injuries. There are also strict rules with corresponding penalties to prevent players from cheating or reckless play. Majority of old-time players have not received injury greater than a sprained ankle.

Another good thing about rugby is the camaraderie and overall sportsmanship the sport engenders. Every member of a rugby league club play on the field the entire time and there is no division between star players and bench boys, developing overall team unity. Rugby players also show great respect toward other players regardless of their team, and some actually love playing rugby for this reason.
